Our base will be on Valentia Island. After a day on the water, you will enjoy comfortable accommodation in close proximity to a range of pub and restaurant facilities. We can promise a unique experience. Valentia Island's location has been a magnet to settlers since Stone Age times. Being on the Gulf Stream coast, its flora is subtropical and lush, its wildlife and fish is abundant, its maritime landscape awe-inspiring. Valentia is internationally renowned as the site of the first Trans Atlantic Cable Station and for the quality of its quarried slate which can be found on the roofs of many European public buildings. Whether your interest is fossils, food, fishing or fun, Valentia has it all!
If you have your own equipment and/or do not wish to avail of the accomodation option, please send us an email and we will be happy to quote you a reduced price.
This includes:
| Evening Before | Arrive Monday evening. Settle in to accommodation. Introductory talk and welcome dinner. (8.30pm approx.) |
| Day 1 | Depart Knightstown, site of the first Transatlantic Cable Station and explore by sea kayak the Gulf Stream islands of Valentia, Beginish and Church. The evening will be spent sampling the food, “ceol, caint agus craic” in the traditional pubs of Portmagee before retiring for a good night's rest. |
| Day 2 | Visit the Skellig Experience Centre before leaving the busy fishing port of Portmagee. Explore classic sea kayaking under the dramatic cliffs on the southern and western approaches to Valentia, Horse, Long and Lamb Islands. The superb rock architecture and awesome scenery will guarantee you a quality day at sea. Again, our day will finish off relaxing over a hearty warming meal in sociable surroundings. |
| Day 3 | Explore St.Finians Bay and spectacular Puffin Island. A memorable sea kayaking experience with classic wildlife interest awaits you. Puffin Island is a Birdwatch Ireland Nature Reserve and proposed National Heritage area. Let us guide you through its teeming seabird colonies and help you identify its many breeding species. The island cliffs come alive both by day and night to the raucous calls of the seabirds, the moaning of Grey Seals, piping Oystercatchers and softer purring of Storm Petrels. A circumnavigation of this distintinctive whale backed island is guaranteed to delight any seakayaker. All going to plan, our day should finish 5pm approx. |
Please note: Weather conditions will be monitored continuously. Occasionally, we may have to alter the proposed schedule if wind speeds are unfavourable.
